• Over the past 6 years, we have been working on a strategic plan that included the introduction of a new Au.D. (Doctor of Audiology) degree program. In May 2007, the first class was graduated!
• The SLHS faculty is composed of highly productive and highly visible researchers, having grants in NIH, NSF and other agencies. Our research projects reflect the inherently interdisciplinary nature of our field and we are adding faculty to accommodate an increasingly multi-disciplinary focus in speech, language, and hearing sciences. Presently, our faculty has highly regarded research programs in child language development, brain mechanisms, underlying language processing, neurophysiological bases of speech motor control, linguistics of American Sign Language, infant speech/language development, speech perception, and basic mechanisms of hearing. We are in the process of adding faculty to accommodate a growing multi-disciplinary focus on speech, language, and hearing sciences.
• We offer Ph.D. degrees in our department in association with many interdisciplinary programs at Purdue, such as neuroscience and gerontology. Students at Purdue may choose to earn the Ph.D. degree with or without clinical certification in Audiology or Speech-Language Pathology. Employment prospects for PhD's from our program are exceptionally good, and graduates of our program go on to academic careers at other top-ranked programs.
• The department includes Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Clinics that are open to the public. The Audiology Clinic provides a full range of diagnostic and rehabilitative services to children and adults. In the past year, there were approximately 2200 patient visits for diagnostic services and rehabilitative services, including hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and group and individual therapy. OSHA hearing tests are given to Purdue employees whose job puts them at risk for hearing problems.
• The Speech-Language Clinic offers many programs, including an adult language program for clients with language problems following stroke or other brain injuries, a birth-to-three program, an adult geriatric program at the Indiana Veterans' Home, the Purdue Preschool Language Program, and voice therapy in conjunction with area physicians. The Speech-Language Clinic had 3740 patient visits in 2006. Finally, our Audiology and Speech-Language Clinics also provide hearing, speech, and language screening to all incoming Purdue Freshmen.
